Connecting research, innovation, and industry growth
Staff writer, 23 April 2026.
When knowledge, practical know‑how, and innovation come together, industries grow faster and both corporates and SMEs can stay ahead of the pack.
I will make bold to say that powerful linkages mean research institutions come up with new ideas, businesses turn them into practical solutions, and industries expand them into commercial value.
To give an instance, when universities develop new drought‑resistant crops and agro‑processors use them, SMEs benefit through higher yields while corporates secure stable supply chains.
Likewise, manufacturing firms that collaborate with tech hubs can develop and test new products, which may lead to reducing costs.
Collaborations seem like the go-to method to realise such objectives.
In the end, corporates must think about investing in research partnerships that strengthen South Africa’s industrial ecosystem, while SMEs should find ways to tap into local innovation networks.
